Fire Prevention

OSU Fire Prevention is dedicated to ensuring all of the buildings on our Columbus campus meet or exceed the State of Ohio Fire Code as well as the City of Columbus Fire Code.

All buildings on campus are inspected at least once per year by OSU inspectors.


Working with Columbus Fire Department (CFD), State of Ohio Fire Marshals office and other OSU departments, the following categories and inspection schedule have been developed by the OSU Fire Prevention:


Category 1

Buildings in this category will receive a full building inspection 4 times a year.

o All High Rise buildings, as defined by the City of Columbus(Any occupied building that is at least 75 feet high)

o All Residential Halls / Buildings


Category 2

Buildings in this category are required by law and/or accreditation authorities to receive inspections at more frequent intervals and/or have inspection requirements that exceed local ordinance and state law.

o Medical Center
o Bio Level III buildings


Category 3

Buildings in this category will receive a full building inspection 2 times a year

o All buildings with lab animal research
o All buildings capable of housing large events (arena, stadium, large assembly halls, etc)
o Hotels
o Critical Infrastructure (utilities, telecommunications network, information technology systems)
o Libraries
o Laboratories, Chemical Stockpiles



Category 4

Buildings in this category will be inspected annually

o Administrative buildings
o Classrooms
o All buildings not falling specifically listed in another category


Any mixed-use building which contains operation that fall under more than 1 of the above categories will be placed into the more stringent category.

  • Tent Permits

    OSU Fire Prevention used to require permits for errecting tents. In 2007, the State of Ohio Department of Commerce began requiring that tent permits be issued through their office.

    If you are interested in errecting a tent on OSU porperty that is at least 400 square feet, you MUST obtain a permit from the State of Ohio Department of Commerce. They can be reached at 614-752-8200.

    Please allow at least 10 days to obtain the permit. Any tents errected upon the campus without a proper permit is subject to expensive fines.

    The State of Ohio Department of Commerce does charge a fee for all tent permits. This fee is based upon the size, location and occupancy. For more information on their fee structure, please call them at 614-752-8200.
