Emergency Preparedness for Students
  • Get a Kit, Make Plan, Be Informed
As a student, you attend classes and events throughout campus. It is important that you are always prepared to respond if an emergency should occur.

Events such as floods, tornados, winter storms, etc often occur unexpectedly. We all must be vigilant and prepared to react at a moments notice.

Always make sure you are familiar with:

    Your classroom and/or surroundings

The location of the nearest emergency equipment (pull station, fire extinguishers, AED;s, etc)

Two emergency exits out of every building

  • FAQ's
Q: How will I know about an emergency on campus?

A: OSU has several tools that we use to notify students, faculty & staff of emergencies on campus.

One tool that we use is the Buckeye Alert

Buckeye Alert is a text messaging system. We will only use it if you need to take immediate action to preserve your personal safety.

We may also use the campus cable TV system, campus phone system, voice mail system, local news media or other resources.

OSU's official radio station for news and information is WOSU 89.7 FM. You can listen to WOSU 89.7 FM live from your computer HERE

Q: What can I do to prepare myself in a campus building (residence hall, office, etc.)?

A: Having access to information is the best way to be prepared, so be sure to check back on this site often, and register for Buckeye Alert

Everyone is also encouraged to keep certain key items on hand, such as bottled water and a flashlight, and maintain a Disaster Supplies Kit

Other preparedness resources can be found on our Resources and Links page.

Q: What if the power goes out when I am on campus?

A: Follow the directions given to you by your supervisor or Public Safety officials.

It is always a good idea to keep a flashlight or chemical light stick (glow stick) handy in the event that the lights go out.

    Do NOT use candles.

Above all, stay calm and sit tight.

Q: What phone number should I call if I need emergency help?

    A: 9-1-1

Q: How do I know if classes are cancelled and/or offices are closed because of severe weather?

A: On rare occasions, when weather conditions have made it unsafe for studetns, faculty & staff to travel, OSU may cancel classes and/or close SOME university offices. Any official announcement will be posted on OSU.edu as well as the Emergency Management website

We may also use the campus cable TV system, campus phone system, voice mail system, local news media or other resources.

Q: If I notice another student acting in an unusual or threatening manner, what do I do?

A: Contact OSU Police if you feel there is an immediate risk to your own or someone else’s safety. You can also report this to any faculty member.

Q: Do I really have to leave the building when the fire alarm goes off?

A: YES. Fire alarms should never be ignored.

Q: How does the University respond to an incident?

A: The University has comprehensive plans which are continuously updated, personnel are trained, and routine exercises (emergency drills/scenarios) are held with campus first responders, University leaders and departments. OSU Emergency Management works to foster and sustain partnerships with local, federal, and regional authorities, private and non-profit organizations and business and government neighbors.
